Has James Joyce Been Set Free?

JJ

I posted this article as a comment to another post but didn’t want it to get lost in the shuffle. James Joyce’s grandson has had a stranglehold on Joyce’s works, that hold was to expire on 1/1/12. The article lays out the actions that this copyright holder has taken and how it has affected academia.

  1. That New Yorker article is great. I was alerted to this situation through a story in a textbook for another class (Infringement Nation) and while i think the expiry is a good step, there’s still so much — posthumously produced work and private letters — that Stephen Joyce still holds. It’s just unfortunate that work from someone who had a broad worldview is restricted so much.
